In this unit I told you we didn´t have an exam, we are going to do some experiments at home. But first, you need to learn something about Matter and Materials. Unit 6 Matter and Materials.
► WHAT IS MATTER? Matter is everything around you. Matter is something that has weight, occupies a space and has volume. Matter has two basic properties: -Mass: It is the quantity of matter something has. The unit is Kg. -Volume: It is the space something occupies. Remeber the example of the weight of steal and the weight of straw. ¿Qué pesa más, un kilo de hierro o un kilo de paja? El volumen y la masa son dos cosas distintas. La masa es la cantidad, lo que pesa una cosa y la unidad de medida es el kilo. EL instrumento que utilizamos es una báscula o peso. El volumen es el espacio que ocupa algo. La unidad de medida es el metro cúbico.
► MATTER AND ITS CHARACTERISTICS. Each type of matter is called a substance. Some examples of substances are water and steel. There are pure substances and mixtures. -Pure substances. They are substances that consist of only one type of matter. (sugar, water...) -Mixtures. They are substances that consist of two or more types of matter. Mixtures can be homogeneous mixtures or heterogeneous mixtures. In a homogeneous mixture, the substances that compose it cannot be seen with the naked eye. (a simple vista) In a heterogeneous mixture, the substances that compose it can be seen with the naked eye.
